The American Heart Association recommends eating oily fish such as wild-caught salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardine, and tuna, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids and safe for most people. However, they warn against eating large amounts of shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tile fish and farmed salmon, which can contain mercury and other environmental pollutants. Fish oil supplements can cause mild side effects such as belching, bad breath, heartburn, and nausea. However, taking them with food or freezing them can help alleviate these effects.
