Eating lots of oily fish and other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids helps stop migraines, a study claims.

Researchers found that those with persistent headaches felt less pain when they ate a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

The acid is found in foods like salmon, sardines, and nuts.

The study published in the British Medical Journal found that participants who consumed more omega-3s had less severe and shorter headaches.

Previous research has shown that omega-3s have analgesic effects, while omega-6s can make pain worse.

Researchers at North Carolina University said the study shows that “pain can be treated with dietary changes.”

The NHS claims that a healthy diet should include at least two servings of fish per week, including one oily fish.

182 people took part in the new study, mostly young women who had migraines between five and 20 days a month.

The women were divided into three groups and received different diets. The first received increased omega-3 acids, while the second had increased omega-3 and simultaneously decreased omega-6 fatty acids.

The third group was a control group and did not change their diet.

Previous research has shown that omega-3s have analgesic effects, while omega-6s can make pain worse.

Omega-6 fatty acids are a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid found in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds.

During the study, both high omega-3 groups saw significant reductions in the severity and duration of the headaches they suffered. But the group that also cut their omega-6 intake saw the greatest benefits.

The omega-3-rich diet was associated with a reduction of 1.3 hours of headache per day and two headache days per month.

Meanwhile, the high omega-3 and low omega-6 diet group saw 1.7 hours of headache reduction per day and four headache days per month.

Experts say this means dieting is as good as newly approved headache relievers to help reduce the number of symptoms.

Participants were given oil and butter formulas and protein foods, including fish, that were needed to meet fatty acid goals.

They also kept a daily journal to record headache incidence and the impact it had on their quality of life.

The study authors said, “Although the diets did not significantly improve quality of life, they resulted in large, robust reductions in the frequency and severity of headaches compared to the control diet.

“This study provides biologically plausible evidence that pain can be treated by targeted dietary changes in humans.”

They said the results suggest that omega-3 and omega-6 acids play a vital role in pain management and “open the door to new approaches to managing chronic pain in humans”.

In a linked editorial, Dr. Rebecca Burch of Harvard Medical School that the results suggest doctors should recommend a high omega-3 diet to patients.

She said the results “bring us one step closer to a goal long sought by headache sufferers and those who care for them: a migraine diet backed by solid clinical trial results.”

She added, “The new study suggests that dietary intervention may be comparable or better.” [than headache pills].

“Dietary interventions in combination with pharmacological treatments could have additional benefits.”
